Lloyd Loom
History

The legendary Lloyd Loom process was invented in 1917 by the American Marshall B. Lloyd, who twisted kraft paper around a metal wire, placed the paper threads on a loom and wove them into what was to become the traditional Lloyd Loom fabric. Lloyd Loom chairs quickly became very popular in America, and in 1921 Marshall B. Lloyd sold his patent to an English manufacturer, which used Lloyd Loom in an original manner to create a collection of typical English furniture. Lloyd Loom was soon all the rage in Europe. At the height of its popularity, in the 1930s, Lloyd Loom furniture could be found in hotels, restaurants and tea rooms, as well as aboard zeppelins, cruise ships and ocean-going liners. When the factory in England was bombed at the end of the Second World War, the production of Lloyd Loom chairs came to a halt in Europe.
Some time later, Vincent Sheppard picked up the threads of the business and designed his own line based on the original process. Since then, Vincent Sheppard had developed into a leading furniture company, with its head office in Belgium.
Vincent Sheppard furniture is still manufactured in the traditional way, using a unique process that dates back to early last century. Kraft paper is twisted round a metal wire, forming paper threads that are woven into mats. This wicker work is then attached to a frame, creating the legendary sitting comfort of Lloyd Loom. And the smooth, non-catch finish to the fabric keeps your skin or clothing from being damaged.
Vincent Sheppard’s Outdoor Collection now enables you to enjoy traditional Lloyd Loom seating comfort on your terrace, on the balcony, or around the pool. The furniture’s hand-welded aluminium frames make these chairs particularly sturdy and ultra-lightweight, which also means they are extremely easy to handle. The chairs are dipped in a bath of latex to give them a protective layer that is resistant to moisture and damp. This protective layer is then baked on in a kiln. Finally, the chairs are given a finishing coat of moisture-resistant lacquer in the colour of the customer’s choice. The open weave design means that Lloyd Loom chairs do not heat up and retain heat when left in the sun. To enable you to enjoy your Lloyd Loom furniture for even longer, we recommend that you bring the chairs indoors during the cold, damp winter months.
Lloyd Loom furniture requires virtually no special care. Its thick protective layer makes it resistant to scratches, so all you have to do is give the furniture a wipe with a damp cloth.
Today, thanks to Vincent Sheppard, Lloyd Loom is still charming and beautiful as ever. With his own interpretation of the fabric, Vincent Sheppard has created a dazzling collection of contemporary furniture that blends classic lines in a original manner with elegant innovation. All in the tradition of Lloyd Loom.
